
Lumberjacks Fall to Blue Hose in Opening Game of Axe’Em Classic

NACOGDOCHES, Texas- The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks (2-3, 0-0) fell to the Presbyterian College Blue Hose (3-3, 0-0) in overtime by a final score of 58-55 in the Lumberjacks first game of the Axe'Em Classic.
Myles Jenkins scored the first two points of the game for SFA and finished the 6-0 run with a dunk. The Blue Hose would respond by going on a 5-0 run of their own to bring the game within one point at the first media timeout. Presbyterian would continue their scoring run out of the timeout to take a 7-6 lead, but the Lumberjacks wouldn't go away quietly as Keith Lamar drained a three to end the scoring run and put the 'Jacks back on top 9-7.
Presbyterian would fight their way back to take a 12-10 lead into the second media time out of the first half. SFA would respond quickly as Juhlawnei Stone scored two buckets to take the lead followed by Nana Antwi-Boasiako draining both of his free throws to take a 16-12 lead. Presbyterian would end the 'Jacks run with a three-pointer to bring the game back within one, 16-15. SFA would go on a 7-3 scoring run to take a commanding 23-15 lead. Presbyterian would answer with two quick buckets to pull within a four-point lead.
At the end of the first half, the Lumberjacks held a 30-22 lead. Juhlawnei Stone led the 'Jacks at the half with six points going 3-for-6 from the field. Stone also led the Lumberjacks with six rebounds at the half. SFA recorded five blocks at the half with five different players each recording one.
The Blue Hose would open the second half on an 8-0 run to tie the game at 30 but would be stopped by another Keith Lamar three to retake the lead. The Lumberjacks would extend their lead as Matt Hayman began to heat up with a beautiful layup followed by a three pointer on the very next possession to take a 38-31 lead.
The 'Jacks would take a 42-38 lead to the media timeout as Myles Jenkins threw down another dunk. Matt Hayman would end a nearly two-minute scoring drought for both teams with another driving layup, 44-38. The Blue Hose would respond quickly draining a three to pull within two, 44-42.
The game would remain tight as both teams traded blows but the 'Jacks would lean on Matt Hayman as he would continue to heat up in the paint. The Blue Hose would pull within one, 50-49, with four minutes remaining. Presbyterian would tie the game at 50-50 with 3:47 to play.
The Blue Hose would take the lead with 2:15 to play, 52-50. Matt Hayman would tie the game at 52 all hitting a fadeaway jumper with 20 seconds remaining. After the defense would stand tall and snag a rebound time would expire and the Lumberjacks would send the game to overtime.
The Blue Hose would win the overtime tip and break the tie with two made free throws, 54-52. After a stop on defense, the Lumberjacks would get the ball back with 9.8 seconds and a chance to win the game. Matt Hayman would miss a deep three and the Lumberjacks fell short losing 58-55.
