
SFA Grabs 10th Win in 92-73 Victory Over UT Arlington

NACOGDOCHES, Texas- The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks continued conference play against the UT Arlington Mavericks. SFA won their fifth game in a row with a 92-73 win over the Mavericks and improved to 10-5 (3-1 WAC). The Lumberjacks have now won two of the last three matchups against UTA, since entering the WAC in 2021.
The Lumberjacks picked up their 10th win in dominant fashion as they won by 19 points over the Mavericks. SFA scored 55 second half points and were led by Matt Hayman's 20-point performance. Hayman was named Pilgrim's Player of the Game. He finished 7-for-12 (58.3%) from the field, 4-for-6 from the three-point line and added two steals.
UT Arlington got the game going by winning the opening tip-off. SFA's offense started the game off shooting at a very efficient rate. Trough the first six minutes the Lumberjacks shot 3-for-4 (75.0%) from the field and 2-for-3 (66.7%) from behind the arc.
After ten minutes of play Frank Staine lead the way in scoring with five points and SFA led 22-18. The Lumberjacks' biggest lead of the first half was ten points. SFA held their lead from the 18:27 mark until halftime.
With 1:13 remaining in the opening half, Frank Staine converted on his four-point play to extend SFA's lead to 35-27. The 'Jacks finished the last three and a half minutes of the first half on a 6-2 run and entered halftime with a 37-27 lead.
Staine was the leading scorer for SFA in the first half. He shot 3-for-6 (50.0%) from the field and 2-for-3 (66.6%) from the three-point line. The Lumberjack defense forced the Mavericks into 13 turnovers and posted seven steals. Stephen F. Austin's bench scored 16 points and was led by Jalil Beaubrun's seven points.
The Mavericks shot 10-for-24 (41.7%) from the field, 4-for-14 (28.6%) from the three-point line and were led by Makaih Williams' eight points. UTA was also outrebounded by SFA 17-14 in the first half.
SFA got the second half started with an 18-5 run that extended the Lumberjack lead to 55-32 with 15:03 to play. With ten minutes in the game Matt Hayman (13) and Jalil Beaurbun (13) were the leading scorers for SFA.
Matt Hayman hit his fourth three-pointer of the game with 3:19 remaining to give SFA an 83-62 lead. SFA's 12 three-pointers were the made since their 14 made threes against Drake on November 20th.
The Lumberjacks finished the game with four scorers in double digits. Sadaidriene Hall (12), AJ Cajuste (15), Matt Hayman (20), and Jalil Beaubrun (15) combined for 62 of the Lumberjacks' 92 points. SFA finished the game 33-for-66 (50.0%) from the field and 12-for-25 (48.0%) from the three-point line.
SFA's defense forced 18 turnovers and posted 10 steals. Chrishawn Christmas led the Lumberjacks in steals (3), for the second game in a row. Cajuste and Hayman also added two steals each.
Stephen F. Austin will be back on the road to face the Utah Tech Trailblazers in Burns Arena. Tip-off will be at 8:00 p.m. CT on January 11th. The Trailblazers currently stand at 6-8 and are 2-1 in WAC play.
