NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Sam Houston defeated Stephen F. Austin 8-3 in game three to complete the sweep on the Lumberjacks. SHSU holds their top spot in the WAC at 27-18 (WAC 18-6) as SFA falls to 19-22 (WAC 11-13).
The Bearkats started the game steadily building a lead by scoring one run in each of the first four innings. The Lumberjacks struggled to get a runner on base in the first three innings, but Clayton Loranger recorded the first SFA baserunner with a single in the bottom of the fourth. Tom Biggs brought Loranger into score later in the inning with another single, bringing the score to 4-1 Sam Houston.
Following three scoreless frames, Sam Houston doubled their runs by scoring four in the eighth with one home run in the inning. The 'Jacks responded in the bottom half by loading up the bases on their first three batters. Loranger stepped up next and hit a soft groundball to the second-basemen who bobbled the ball to allow everyone to move up the base and give the Lumberjacks a run. Cal Martin followed up and hit a sacrifice fly to left field to bring in the third SFA run of the game.
The Lumberjacks threaten to score some runs in the bottom of the ninth but left two runners stranded on second and third base to give SHSU the win and series sweep.
Five Lumberjacks recorded a hit in the match with Cole Hill, Nolan Brown, and Hunter Prescher being the other 'Jacks to reach base off a single.
The Stephen F. Austin baseball team returns back to Jaycees Field Tuesday, May 2nd with a match against Houston Christian University at 6:30.
