The New Mexico State offense exploded in the first half of the game, scoring 12 runs in the second through fifth innings.
Sam Adams was able to give the Lumberjacks the early lead in top of the second, driving in one with a double down the right field line. Julian Thompson followed Adams with an RBI groundout to give SFA the 2-0 advantage. That lead quickly dissipated in the bottom half of the inning as the first six Aggies to come up to the plate reached base and scored five runs in the inning. During their rally, New Mexico State recorded a home run, a triple, two doubles, and a single.
Cal Martin brought it back to a close ballgame as he smashed a two-run homer to dead center in the top of the third. However, the Aggies responded right back in the next half inning with a solo home run of their own. Another RBI single later in the inning brought the deficit back to three for the Lumberjacks.
New Mexico State continued to pour the runs on the 'Jacks with another solo homer in the fourth and four-run inning in the fifth from a two-run double and a two-run single. After five innings, the Aggies held a 12-4 lead.
The Lumberjacks fought to cut their deficit by scoring one in the sixth from an RBI hit-by-pitch and another in the eight from a line drive solo home run from Thompson. But the Aggies cut the game short as they run-ruled the 'Jacks in the bottom of the eighth by taking advantage of a costly defensive error that allowed three runs to scored.
The Lumberjack pitching staff had a night to forget as they struggled to contain the Aggie bats and find the strike zone. At the end of the night, the 'Jacks let up 14 hits, six walks, and hit six batters.
Both Alex Rodgers and Clayton Loranger extended their hitting streaks by recording one hit apiece. Cole Hill led the team with three as he was one of four Lumberjacks to have multiple hits on the day. Martin, Thompson, and Nolan Brown were the other batters to record more than one hit.
The 'Jacks look to rebound in game two against New Mexico State tomorrow at 7:00 p.m.
