
Baseball Returns Home Tuesday to Host UTSA

NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin baseball team returns home for the first time in nearly a month and their first time since the opening weekend to take on the UTSA Roadrunners.
A Look at the Lumberjacks
The Lumberjacks are hoping that returning to the home crowd will straighten the ship as the 'Jacks are 1-4 in their last five games. Since their opening stretch of games at Jaycees Field, the Lumberjacks have played all their games on the road and have gone 5-6 in that span.
The bats have been there for the Lumberjacks this season as they currently have 10 players with at least a .200 batting average and a team average of .271. Once the 'Jacks are able to lower the opposing team's batting average of .303, they'll start seeing more games going in the win column.
Peyton Parker has yet to show any signs of slowing down offensively. In the 16 games played so far, Parker continues to hold a .403 average and a 1.007 OPS. Parker's 29 hits on the season is the best in the conference and 15th best in the country. He also leads the team in doubles and is one of three players to have multiple homers on the year.
Alex Rodgers has provided a powerful punch to the top of the SFA lineup as he leads the WAC in home runs (6), runs (23), and total bases (48).
A Look at the Roadrunners
UTSA is having a strong start to the 2023 season as they are 14-3, 2-0 in the only two road games they have played so far.
The Roadrunners are riding on a six game win streak collecting wins over Utah, Texas State, and a sweep over Texas A&M Corpus Christi. In those six games, they outscored their opponents 86-28. UTSA set a school record of 31 runs against Texas A&M Corpus Christi this past Saturday.
The Lumberjack pitching staff has their work cut out for them as the Roadrunners carry some dangerous bats with them. UTSA leads the nation in triples (14), and are top ten in the country in batting average (7th - .338), hits (3rd - 204), and on-base percentage (9th - .449). The Roadrunners have four players with at least a .300 batting average and a 1.000 OPS. Antonio Valdez is the slugger for UTSA as he comes into Nacogdoches with a .463 average (31-for-67), four doubles, three triples, and five home runs. Most notably, Valdez leads the nation in RBIs with 34.
UTSA also has some strong arms in their rotation as they have the 10th best team ERA in the country with 2.72. Simon Miller carries the 7th best ERA in the country with 0.47, as in 19.1 innings, he has only allowed one earned run. The Roadrunners also have good command of the strike zone as they are 7th best in the country in walks allowed per nine innings with 2.66. In 21 innings pitched, Ulises Quiroga has yet to allowed a walk to opposing batters.
