SUGAR LAND, Texas - Lamar defeated Stephen F. Austin 2-1 in game two of the Sugar Land Classic. Lamar improves to 7-0 while the Lumberjacks fall to 2-5.
After a night where they scored 21 runs, the Lumberjacks were hoping to keep the hot bats rolling into today. That's especially what Cade Stapleton was hoping for, as he started on the mound for the 'Jacks. Stapleton recorded a quality start for SFA, going six innings only allowing one earned run off of five hits. Unfortunately, the 'Jacks were unable to get Stapleton enough support to back him up.
The Cardinals scored the first run of the game in the second inning after a lead-off double turned into a run when the 'Jacks committed a throwing error. That was the only sort of action that took place in the first four innings as the Lumberjacks failed to produce any hits until the fifth inning. Lamar added another run in the bottom of the fifth following a string of two singles and two walks.
The only Lumberjack run of the night came in the sixth inning when Alex Rodgers knocked out his third home run of the season, the only Lumberjack to have more than one home run so far into the season. After Rodgers' home run, the 'Jacks would only get two more hits in the game and failed to get any sort of run going to tie the game and/or take the lead.
Carter Hines and Benny Emmons III both came into to relief for one inning and keep the Cardinals from getting any more hits. Clayton Loranger, Peyton Parker, Cal Martin, and Cody Fleischer all collected one hit on the night.
The Lumberjacks look to bounce back against Northwestern State University at 2:00 p.m. for their final game in the Sugar Land Classic.
