
Baseball Hits the Road for the Sugarland Classic

SUGARLAND, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin baseball team is set to take on Houston Christian University, Lamar University, and Northwestern State University in the Sugarland Classic. The Lumberjacks then travel to Natchitoches, Louisiana for one more match against Northwestern.
A Look at the Lumberjacks
After taking on a tough Big 12 team in Kansas State on opening weekend, the Lumberjacks rebounded with a statement win against Prairie View A&M University. The 'Jacks look to carry the momentum from their last win onto this weekend.
Peyton Parker made his presence known on opening weekend, putting on a hitting clinic in the first five games. Parker is second in total hits in the country with 12. His 12 hits came in 23 at-bats, putting him at a .522 batting average. Parker currently sits at a 1.281 OPS, thanks to his one home run and two doubles that he collected this past weekend.
Alex Rodgers had SFA debuting week to remember as he collected nine hits (two home runs and two doubles) on 21 at-bats to put him at a .429 average and a 1.310 OPS. The lead-off hitter drove in five RBI's, scored eight times, and stole two bases on the weekend.
Tom Biggs collected the hits when it matter the most, as he picked up seven RBI's in the first five games and leads the team in that statistic. Biggs' seven hits puts him at a .389 average heading into the weekend.

A Look at the Huskies
The Huskies are off to a rough start on the 2023 season after going 0-3 at UTRGV then taking a loss to Baylor to put them at 0-4. In each game so far, they have allowed at least ten runs.
Through four games, the Huskies don't have any players that have more than four hits. Logan Letney has been the most productive offensively for HCU, picking up three hits on seven at-bats.
Reed Chumley carries the big bat on the team, as his three hits consist of two doubles and a home run. Chumley leads the team with four RBI's.

A Look at the Cardinals
Unlike the Huskies, the Cardinals have had a very successful start to the season. Lamar is 5-0 so far, picking up some big wins against Kansas State and #5 Texas A&M. The Cardinals have yet to allow more than five runs in a game.
Former Lumberjack, Kanin Dodge, has had a hot bat to start of the season, picking up six hits in 15 at-bats (.400 average). Dodge has driven in two RBI's, scored three runs, and picked up seven walks.
Ryan Snell has only had four hits in 21 at-bats, but he makes those hits count. In those four hits, one is a double and the other three are home runs. Two of those home runs coming against Texas A&M.

A Look at the Demons
The Demons are coming off their first win of the season against LSU-Alexandria after starting off 0-3 in the Jaguar Classic.
Michael Dattalo has had the hottest start offensively for the Demons, recording a .400 average by picking up six hits in 15 at-bats. Dattalo has also driven in the most runs with four. Only two other Demons have a batting average of .250 or more.
Cal Carver opened up the Demon's season with a dominant performance on the mound against South Alabama. Carver went five innings picking up six strikeouts and only allowing two hits and one walk.
