
Lumberjacks Drops WAC Opener 68-66 to Texans

NACOGDOCHES, Texas- The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks (4-3, 0-1) opened Western Athletic Conference (WAC) play with a 68-66 lost to the Tarleton Texans (5-2, 1-0) at the William R. Johnson Coliseum tonight.
The 'Jacks offense had trouble finding their rhythm early as they were held without a field goal until the 15:25 mark when Clayton Southwick scored from underneath the basket. SFA found themselves down 12-3 with 14:00 left in the opening half.
An 11-2 run by the Lumberjacks tied things at 16-16 with 10:13 left in the opening half. Kimahri Wilson nailed his second three-pointer of the half and gave SFA their first lead at 19-18 with 9:07 left in the first half.
Latrell Jossell cashed in on a three-point play of his own, following his made shot at the free throw line. Nana Antwi-Boasiako's back-to-back baskets gave SFA their biggest lead of the night as they led 34-27 with 2:21 in the opening half.
At the end of twenty minutes the Lumberjacks and Texans sat locked at 34-34 at halftime. SFA finished the first half with three different scorers posting six points. Nana Antwi-Boasiako, Latrell Jossell and Kimahri Wilson shot a combined 7-for-12 with 18 points.
Juhlawnei Stone found the first second half points for the Lumberjacks with his layup. Stephen F. Austin found their first lead of the half following Frank Staine's made three-pointer. With 12:18 left in the second half, SFA led 45-42.
With under ten minutes left in game, SFA took a 53-46 lead. Scoring slowed for the 'Jacks as they found themselves down 61-55 with 3:07. Frank Staine cashed in on all three free throws to bring the Lumberjack's deficit to 67-66 with 12.6 seconds left in the ball game. With four seconds remaining in the game, Kimahri Wilson jump shot from the corner rimmed out and the Jacks fell 68-66 to the Texans.
Frank Staine was named the SFA Player of the Game, leading the team with a game and season-high 13 points. Nana Antwi-Boasiako finished as SFA's only other double-digit scorer. Nana had 12 points along with seven rebounds and two assists. It was his third straight game scoring in double digits and 4th overall.
SFA will be back in action on Saturday, December 2nd when they travel to Moody Coliseum to face Abilene Christian University. The 'Jacks and Wildcats will tip-off at 5:00 p.m. The Lumberjacks next home game is Tuesday, December 5th when they host Louisiana Tech in a non-conference game. Tip-off is set for 6:30 p.m. at the William R. Johnson Coliseum.
