
Lumberjacks Drop Season Finale 36-24

The Colonials had the opportunity to score first and began their opening drive at the EKU 21-yardline. Parker Mckinney's scramble was stopped by Aaron Austin who forced a fumble and the Colonials to punt.
SFA got their drive started at the Lumberjack 20-yardline. Maurer got the drive going after finding 10+ yard completions to Lawton Rikel, Isaiah Davis, and Keshon Williams. Williams' 18-yard reception was a season high. The 'Jacks drive got all the way down to the EKU 5-yardline before Chris Campos SFA a 3-0 lead with 6:27 left in the first quarter.
The Colonials got their second drive of the day started at their own 28-yardline. The Lumberjack defense gave EKU's offense all they could handle as they forced them into a 17-play, 57-yard drive that only yielded three points. With 12:48 in the second quarter the game sat tied 3-3.
Eastern Kentucky finally got their Braedon Sloan and their run game going in the second quarter as they found three first down runs on the drive. The Lumberjack defense was able to hold strong in the redzone and hold the Colonials to a Patrick Nations' 27-yard field goal. With 7:12 in the opening half SFA trailed 6-3.
SFA got their third drive of the day started but it didn't last long. Brian Maurer was strip sacked and the Colonials returned it for a scoop and score touchdown. With 2:25 left in the half EKU took a 13-3 lead.
The 'Jacks got their final drive of the half going and got things going through the air and on the ground. Josh Thompson and Jerrell Wimbley both contributed big plays for SFA on the drive. Stephen F. Austin's leader in points added to his total, as Chris Campos made it a one score game with his 31-yard field goal. With :51 left in the half EKU led 13-6.
The Colonials weren't quite finished yet as they put together a quick drive and were able to get into field goal range with :2 remaining in the half. The Colonials turned to Patrick Nations once again who knocked through a 31-yard field goal. At the end of the first half SFA trailed 16-6.
The Lumberjacks got the ball to start the second half. The SFA offense found success through the passing attack as the 'Jacks converted on three third downs. Maurer found Lawton Rikel on fourth and goal for a 4-yard pass and the game's first offensive touchdown for either team. With 8:58 left in the third quarter SFA cut the deficit to 16-13.
The 'Jacks offense got the ball back following a touchback fumble that was forced by Dylan Tooker and recovered by SFA in the endzone. Maurer continued to find his rhythm through the air and got the Lumberjacks back into field goal range for another Chris Campos field goal. Campos' 33-yard field goal tied the game at 16-16 with 1:11 remaining in the third quarter.
The next points of the game came from the Colonials rushing attack. Braedon Sloan found the endzone on his 15-yard rushing touchdown for EKU's first offensive touchdown of the day. With 14:03 remaining in the fourth SFA trailed 23-16.
EKU added to their lead following a controversial call that resulted in a 18-yard receiving touchdown to Jalen Burbage. The Colonials extended their lead to 30-16 with 7:24 left in the game.
Lawton Rikel continued his big day with his 31-yard catch that set himself up to score his second touchdown of the day on the following play. Maurer's 11-yard touchdown to Rikel pulled the 'Jacks to a one score game. SFA converted on the two-point conversion with Maurer's throw to Kylon Harris. With 5:06 left in the fourth EKU led 30-24.
The Colonials scored their final touchdown of the day with 2:57 left in the game. Braedon Sloan's 55-yard rushing touchdown gave EKU a 36-24 lead.
Stephen F. Austin dropped the last game of the season 36-24. This concludes the 2023 SFA Football Season.
