NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Stephen F. Austin football team is destined to be a preseason top-25 team as the Lumberjacks enter year four under head coach Colby Carthel. Coming off an 8-4 campaign in the 2021 season and a berth in the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2014, excitement is high for East Texas' NCAA Division I football program.
Saturday's spring game will provide the first glimpse at what the 2022 Lumberjacks are made of, and there is plenty to like entering the annual showcase. With quarterback Trae Self, wide receiver Xavier Gipson, defensive end BJ Thompson, and defensive lineman Dennis Osagiede.
Ballyhooed new defensive coordinator Joe Cauthen is on staff, there will be plenty to watch for at the Purple & White Spring Game.
Anytime the Lumberjacks take the field at Homer Bryce Stadium, it's a meaningful occasion for one of the nation's proudest fanbases. Though nothing is at stake in the spring game, it's an opportunity for individual players to make an impression on their coaches and the fans. Though Carthel and Cauthen likely won't reveal much, the occasion should offer a baseline view of where things stand with one of the sport's top programs entering the summer months.
