SFA Opens Season with 7-3 Win Over NW State

NATCHITOCHES, La. -- Stephen F. Austin opened its 2022 campaign with a convincing 7-3 win over Northwestern State.
Trailing 3-1 to begin the third inning, SFA scored three runs to seize the lead.
Kanin Dodge opened the scoring and took advantage of an NWS error to cut the deficit to within one. Dillon Eatman, facing a 3-2 count, delivered a two-run homerun to left field and the Jacks led 4-3.
Dodge added an RBI double to right field in the fourth inning.
Cal Martin and Jake Zarrello added solo home runs in the fifth and seventh innings, respectively.
Martin batted 3-for-5 with an RBI.
Chaney Dodge, Cameron Crawford each added a hit.
Joe Richter earned the win. Richter tossed six innings, scattered seven hits and allowed one earned run and one walk and fanned two batters.
Skyler Jaco entered in relief and threw two innings, surrendering one hit and struck out five. Brooks Caple appeared in the ninth inning and struck out three.
SFA and NWS return to the diamond Saturday for a 2 p.m. start.
