LAS CRUCES, N.M. – Zya Nugent dropped a career-high 31 points and Stephen F. Austin blitzed New Mexico State 69-55 in Western Athletic Conference action.
"Proud of this group for their resiliency and toughness on the road," said SFA head women's basketball coach Mark Kellogg. "We had to battle for that one and found a way to win on a day when we didn't have our best. We didn't get much going offensively as a group, but Zya was feeling it."
Nugent's effort was on 10-for-17 shooting from the field, including 3-for-5 from beyond the arc.
"She carried us through much of that game and we needed it," added Kellogg.
Leading 30-28 at halftime, the Lady Jacks outscored the Aggies 24-13 in the third quarter and shot 60 percent (9-for-15) from the field and went 5-for-7 at the free-throw line.
SFA (21-3, 12-0 WAC) forced NMSU (9-13, 5-7 WAC) into 22 turnovers, which the Ladyjacks turned into 22 points.
Brianna Mitchell scored 12 points and finished 5-for-6 at the charity stripe.
Stephanie Visscher scored six points and hauled in a team-high 11 rebounds.
SFA led for 33:32 and the game was tied seven times and there were three lead changes.
The Ladyjacks return to the court Wednesday at Chicago State.
