CHICAGO, Ill. – Stephen F. Austin running back Jerrell Wimbley was named a finalist for the 2022 Jerry Rice Award, which is awarded to the top freshman football student-athlete at the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS).
Wimbley, a Houston, Texas product, had a standout 2022 campaign and rushed for 604 yards and five touchdowns. The 5-foot-11, 195-pounder back also recorded 168 receiving yards and a touchdown.
In the 41-38 win at Southern Utah, Wimbley rushed for 138 yards on 21 carries to keep the Trailblazers' defense on the field and off balance.
Wimbley's coming out party was at Alcorn in Week 1. He rushed for 74 yards and one touchdown and also added 67 receiving yards out of the backfield.
The freshman is poised for a bright future in the Purple & White.
The Rice Award, now in its 12th season, is named after legendary wide receiver Jerry Rice, who starred at Mississippi Valley State as part of his Hall of Fame career. Past recipients include NFL players Cooper Kupp, Chase Edmonds and Trey Lance.
