
Hawkins' Career Night Lifts SFA past SDSU in Mid-Major Clash

BROOKINGS, S.D. – In a battle between two mid-major heavyweights, Stephen F. Austin raced past South Dakota State 93-82 Saturday evening.
SFA improves to 3-1, while SDSU falls to 2-3 and the Lumberjacks snapped the Jackrabbits 17-game home winning streak.
Nigel Hawkins came off the bench and dropped a career-high 25 points on 7-for-11 shooting from the field. The Houston, Texas product shot 10-for-12 at the free-throw line and grabbed six rebounds.
SFA used its "PressU" mentality and forced SDSU into 20 turnovers, which the Lumberjacks turned into 28 points.
Led by Hawkins, the 'Jacks used a proficient offensive attack in the first half and shot 64.3 percent (18-for-28) from the field. Hawkins scored 14 of his 25 points in the opening stanza on 6-for-9 shooting from the floor.
Hawkins added 11 points in the second half, but this time found his way to the free-throw line and went 8-for-10.
Sadaidriene Hall scored 14 points and went a perfect 6-for-6 at the charity stripe.
Latrell Jossell and Jaylin Jackson-Posey each scored 12 points and AJ Cajuste added nine points.
As a team, the 'Jacks shot 56.4 percent (31-for-55) from the field, including 5-for-11 from 3-point range.
SFA scored 53 points off the bench, 36 points in the paint, and grabbed 33 rebounds.
The 'Jacks now turn their attention to the Montreal Northern Classic with games versus Quinnipiac, Middle Tennessee, and UNC Greensboro.
