Wimbley Named to Rice Award Watch List

CHICAGO, Ill. – Freshman running back Jerrell Wimbley has been added to the prestigious Rice Award Watch List, which is awarded to the top freshman at the FCS level.
Wimbley, a true freshman out of C.E. King HS in Houston, has established himself in the Lumberjacks' backfield. Wimbley has rushed for 373 yards and three touchdowns and is a threat in the receiving with eight grabs for 121 yards and a touchdown.
At Alcorn State, which was a 31-28 comeback victory, Wimbley rushed for 74 yards and accounted for 67 receiving yards along with a touchdown. In the thrilling 41-38 victory over Abilene Christian, Wimbley rushed for 99 yards and a pair of touchdowns.
Last week versus Tarleton, which the Lumberjacks won 41-24, the 5-foot-11, 195 pounder rushed for 61 yards.
The Rice Award, now in its 12th season, is named after legendary Hall of Fame wide receiver Jerry Rice. Past recipients include Los Angeles Rams wide receiver Cooper Kupp (Eastern Washington), Miami Dolphins running back Chase Edmonds (Fordham) and San Francisco 49ers quarterback Trey Lance (North Dakota State).
