
SFA Cross Country Performs Well at Lumberjack Opener

NACOGDOCHES, Texas -- The SFA Cross Country teams opened its 2021 fall campaign with participation in the annual SFA Lumberjack Opener, competing against runners from Northwestern State in a men's and women's race. The women ran a two mile course, and heandily defeated the Demons by a 15-50 score, while the men ran a 5K and also defeated NSU by a lofty margin, 19-40.
The Ladyjacks absolutely dominated the women's race, finishing nine runners ahead of NSU's first finisher and earning the lowest possible score available. Megan Eichler was the top finisher for SFA at 10:50.6, while Maggie Marshall (10:51.2) and Isabel Borrego (10:59.3) rounded out the top three for the home squad. Meredith Clayton (11:08.3), Katrina Thoms (11:08.6) and Alexis Antkowiak (11:11.0) finished fourth, fifth and ixth, respectively, while Peyton Muntz (11:17.3), Katherine English (11:26.2) and Allyson McCutcheon (11:26.5) rounded out spots seven through nine.
On the men's side, a 1-2 finish by Titus Kiplagat (16:34.3) and Max Murphy (16:34.4) was complemented by a fourth and fifth place finish from Garrett Oehlert (17:34.0) and Parker Jones (17:34.3) to guarantee the victory. Michael Urbina (7th-18:06.4), Marcus Ford (8th - 18:08.5) and Brett Gilley (11th - 20:40.8) closed out the scoring for the Lumberjacks.
"Both groups did an exemplary job of executing the race plan", said SFA head cross country coach Rob Hansen. "We wanted to run in groups today and do a great job of communicating with each other throughout the entire race course, and they did that very well. I am proud of both groups for getting the team victory, as this is momentum that we can carry with us throughout the entire season."
