NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The SFA volleyball team closed out play at its own tournament in dominant fashion, dismantling the Warhawks of ULM in just 71 minutes with a 25-16, 25-13, 25-11 sweep to improve to 8-3 overall on the season. SFA also placed three players on the All-Tournament Team, with Ariana Pagan being named the Tournament MVP and Leah Powell and Payton Cerny also earning recognition.
SET ONE
The two teams opened play with several minutes of tightly contested play, with ULM taking a 9-8 lead on a service error a third of the way through the frame. SFA then rattled off eight straight points, led by kills from Powell and Cerny and several attack errors by ULM. The run was the turning point in the set, as SFA didn't let ULM get closer than six points the rest of the way, and after a kill by Pagan and a Kodi Garcia service ace, the 'Jacks claimed the opening set with a 25-16 win.
SET TWO
SFA took the lead early and for good in set two, pulling ahead 4-2 on a kill by Valeria Rosado and one by Cerny. SFA then extended that lead over the next few minutes, going on an 8-2 run that pushed the lead out to 14-6 and was capped off by kills from Pagan, Kayla Grant, Cerny and an ace by Garcia. Another 4-0 run, helped by a Rosado kill and an Alyssa Ortega ace, pushed it out to 19-9, and SFA closed it out from there with kills by Rosado, Hunt and Grant to win set two, 25-13.
SET THREE
SFA wasted little time in set three, taking a 6-0 lead on a kill from Cerny, a pair from Grant and a few ULM miscues. The 'Jacks continued to push the lead out, owning a 16-5 advantage on a Rosado kill and two ULM error, including a block by Hunt and Kelsey Harrington. The listless Warhawks offered little resistance as the 'Jacks rattled off a 7-2 run to move ahead 23-7, then ceded the final two points of the match via a Pagan kill and an Ortega kill to wrap up the set, 25-11.
