DALLAS, Texas -- The third time was the charm for the SFA volleyball team at the SMU Doubletree Invitational, as SFA took down Pacific in four sets on Saturday to earn its first win of 2021 and close out competition at the invitational. The Ladyjacks opened the match with an opening set win, then responded to a 25-15 loss in set two to rattle off victories in a nail-biter set three and four to capture the victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The match opened with a tough back and forth in the opening set, as neither team opened up a lead larger than three points until the 'Jacks took a 21-17 lead off of an attack error by the Tigers. From there, the 'Jacks used a kill from Ariana Pagan, two kills from Ielan Bradley and a service ace from Valeria Rosado to round out the set with a 25-21 victory.
Pacific jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second set and grew that lead to 11-3 in quick order. A .326 attack percentage in the set boosted the Tigers into position to take set two by a 25-15 score.
SFA wasted little time in taking a quick lead in set three, as a kill by Leah Powell, three attack errors by Pacific and a service ace by Alyssa Ortega to take a 5-1 lead. Pacific responded with a 6-0 run of their own, and so the tight nature of set three was established. The back and forth play continued late into the set, where SFA would take control with a slim 20-19 lead. Kills by Ielan Bradley and Taya Mitchell as well as a pair of Pacific errors keyed off a 4-2 run to push SFA into a 24-21 edge. A surge by the Tigers saw them tie it up at 24-24, before SFA closed it out with a Mitchell kill and a block by Rosado.
In the fourth set, the 'Jacks kept the pressure on Pacific, but weren't able to create the distance needed until a 4-1 run turned a 17-18 deficit into a 21-19 lead. After the Tigers pulled a point back with a kill, SFA was there to respond with a kill by Maddy Borque, and three more Pacific errors closed out the match and gave SFA the 3-1 victory.
