DENVER, CO. -- The Lumberjack soccer program will begin its inaugural season in the Western Athletic Conference as preseason favorites in the newly formed Southwest Division, per a release of the league's preseason coaches poll on Wednesday. Stephen F. Austin edged out Abilene Christian and Lamar (tied with 18 points) by accumulating 22 total points and three first place votes in the poll of the league's 12 head coaches, who were not allowed to vote for their own team or players.
Just months after an eventful spring that culminated in the Lumberjacks seizing the 2020 Southland Conference title in the spring season after having been picked to finish eighth in that league's preseason poll, the Lumberjacks open up their WAC membership as the front-runners. In the WAC's South Division, Utah Valley was picked to finish first with 24 total points and four first-place marks, while Seattle was picked close behind with 21 points and one first-place tally.
Coupled with the release of the preseason coaches poll, the WAC also released its Preseason All-WAC Team for soccer, and the Lumberjacks were represented by redshirt sophomore Jamie Jezierski. The defender one was one 11 players selected to the team in additio to Preseason Offensive and Defensive Player of the Year superlatives, given to Sydney Carr of Seattle and Jenna Shephard of Utah Valley, respectively.
