
Ladyjacks Shine in Opening Round Defeat of Northwestern State, 4-1

HAMMOND, La. -- The SFA softball team rode a dominant pitching performance by Kassidy Wilbur and timely hitting to a 4-1 victory over rival Northwestern State in the third round of the 2021 Southland Conference Tournament on Thursday evening. Playing just their first game in the tournament by virtue of a double bye, the 'Jacks (35-10) advance to face #3 McNeese on Friday at 4:00 PM.
After surrendering an early run to the Lady Demons in the top of the first inning, Wilbur settled down nicely and kept NSU scoreless the rest of the way in a complete game shutout to improve to 30-4 on the season. She allowed five hits and struck out ten batters, hurling 142 pitches.
In the bottom of the second inning, Mackenzie Bennett led off the inning with a single. and advanced to second on a walk by Kayla Wallace. Amanda Carden then doubled to score pinch runner Taylor Trosclair for the tying run, and a groundout by Bryana Novegil brought home Wallace one batter later for the go-ahead run.
SFA tacked on an insurance run in the third, as Shaylon Govan reached on an error and came home to score on a towering double to the wall by Gaby Garcia. Om the bottom of the fifth, Garcia drew a walk with two outs and advancd to third on a double by Alex Hedspeth. A fielding error by the Lady Demons then allowed Bennett to reach and Garcia to score the game's final run.
SFA advances to face McNeese on Friday following the Cowgirls' victories over Sam Houston and Central Arkansas earlier on Friday.
