
Ladyjacks Fall in SLC Semifinal Matchup

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas -- The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks traveled to Corpus Christi with a No. 1 seed to their name, but were delegated a handful of a matchup with No. 4 Corpus Christi Friday afternoon, falling to the Islanders 3-0 (20-25, 13-25, 20-25) in the semifinal round of the Southland Conference Tournament. The Ladyjacks conclude the season 23-6, including 11 conference victories and a regular season conference title. The Islanders will face No. 2 seed Sam Houston in the championship match tomorrow at 2:00 p.m for a chance at an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

The Ladyjacks struggled to produce an offensive rhythm in the opening postseason match, accumulating a 0.061 hitting percentage on the day (28-99) with 22 errors. The Islanders displayed consistent efficiency hitting .278 (38-97), with a game-high hitting percentage of .379 (38-97) in the its commanding second set.
Set 1 was on the ropes, even though the Islanders scored seven of the first eight points of the set. Corpus Christi taking its largest lead at 17-12 to head toward the winning trend, but SFA responded with four straight points to cut the lead to 17-18. Three of the next four points resulted in kills for the Islanders, which boosted the lead to 20-17. The Islanders scored four of the last five points for the first team to reach 25.
In Set 2, the Islanders created an early lead to set the tone, which was stamped by a 7-0 scoring run when the game was at 13-7, later to become a 21-7 Islanders lead. The Ladyjacks scored six of the last 10 points of the set, but the Islanders' early advantage was enough to hold SFA. The Ladyjacks took a 7-3 early lead in the third set to gain momentum back for a potential first victory to stay alive, only to be limited with 10 kills. TAMUCC's defense made an impact during the final set as well, committing five blocks to disrupt Ladyjack chances.
