ABILENE, Texas -- A change in scenery did nothing to stop the winning ways of the SFA softball team on Friday, as the 'Jacks took down Abilene Christian in both games of Friday's doubleheader to open the league series. The 'Jacks lit up ACU by a 9-1 score in the opener, and won out on a high-scoring 10-5 affair in the matinee. With the wins, SFA improves to 20-8 on the season and 11-0 in Southland Conference play, and increase their winning streak to ten games.
GAME ONE | 9-1 VICTORY
SFA got off to a hot start yet again in the opener, as Bryana Novegil reached on a single, Shaylon Govan on a walk, and Gaby Garcia drove them both in with a three-run homerun to open the scoring. Leading off the second inning, Marisa Arriaga reached on a single and was in turn driven in by a two-run home run, this time off the bat of Lexi Benson to open up a 5-0 lead. Later that inning, the 'Jacks loaded the bases off of a double by Bailey Richards and walks by Novegil and Govan, and Garcia poked a ball through the left side of the inning to score both Richards and Novegil for a 7-0 lead.
After the Wildcats broke up the shutout bid of Kassidy Wilbur with an RBI triple in the third inning, both sides would post scoreless frames in both the fourth and fifth innings of play. SFA struck again in the sixth inning, as a two-run bomb off the bat of Mackenzie Bennett scored pinch runner Madison Nguyen to open up a 9-1 lead and force ACU to trim the deficit or invoke the run rule. Wilbur and the 'Jacks closed the door in the bottom of the frame to end the game, as Wilbur posted a complete-game effort of six innings pitched, six hits allowed and seven strikeouts.
Garcia led the 'Jacks with a three-hit, five-RBI performance at the plate. while Benson and Bennett each drove in two runs as well. Novegil and Govan each drew a pair of walks, while Novegil tallied two runs scored as well.
GAME TWO | 10-5 VICTORY
In the second game of the doubleheader, SFA took a first inning lead once again, as Garcia hit her second home run of the day to bring in Camryn Middlebrook, who had reached on an error which kept the inning alive for Garcia's at-bat. ACU would strike back in the bottom of the frame, however, clubbing a three-run home run off SFA starter Reagan Chism to take a 3-2 lead.
SFA tied the game up at 3-3 in the top of the second, as Amanda Carden reached on a one-out triple and came home to score on a sacrifice fly by Bailey Richards. Neither team would score in the third inning, but the 'Jacks would briefly take a 4-3 lead in the top of the fourth off of an RBI single by Richards to score Savanna Parker. A two-out RBI double by the Wildcats tied the game up at 4-4 heading into the fifth inning.
In the fifth frame, Gaby Garcia and Alex Hedspeth would get on via singles, and were driven in by an RBI double from Bennett to take a 6-4 lead. With Kassidy Wilbur taking over for Chism in the circle in the bottom of the frame, the Wildcats were able to get one run across but would get no closer in the contest the rest of the way.
SFA put the game out of reach with a four-run sixth inning, beginning with a double by Richards. After advancing to third on a groundout, she came home to score on a sacrifice fly by Middlebrook, allowing the 'Jacks to reload the bases for more damage. Back-to-back walks by Govan and Garcia set the table for Hedspeth, who put the game away with a three-run home run to set up a 10-5 lead.
Wilbur (16-3) earned her second win of the day with three innings of effective relief work, allowing one unearned run on one hit while striking out two batters, Chism pitched four innings, scattering seven hits and a walk while fanning four batters.
