
Ladyjack Softball Sweeps Texas A&M-CC to Set Program Record for Division I Win Streak with 14 Straight

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas -- The SFA softball team has been slowly building momentum for weeks towards a historical mark for the team and accomplished just that with Saturday's 7-2 victory over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. The victory completed the sweep of the Islanders after a pair of wins on Friday, and set a new program record for Division I win streak with 14 straight. The 'Jacks have won 23 of their past 24 games dating back to March 5.
GAME ONE - 2-0
The Ladyjacks got off to a quick start in the first game, scoring a run in each of the first two innings of play to take what would ultimately be the decisive lead. Bryana Novegil reached on an error to lead off the game and advanced to third on a groundout, before Shaylon Govan hit a sacrifice fly to right field to bring Novegil in. One inning later, Alex Hedspeth was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning, stole second and advanced to third on a groundout. Marisa Arriaga then singled to drive in Hedspeth for the insurance run.
Neither side was able to tack on any additional runs, as SFA starter Kassidy Wilbur (18-3) and Islander starter Lara Beatriz (10-6) dueld the rest of the way in a pair of complete game gems. Wilbur flourished in the contest, giving up just two hits and three walks while striking out 12 to earn her 18th victory.
GAME TWO - 6-1
In the second game of Friday's doubleheader, the game remained scoreless until the top fo the fourth frame, when the 'Jacks took a 2-0 lead. A pair of single by Govan and Gaby Garcia got the 'Jacks started, while a sacrifice bunt by Hedspeth advanced Madison Nguyen (PR) to third and Garcia to third. Arriaga then came through with another base knock, this time a double to center field, to plate two runs for SFA. The Islanders pulled a run back on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the inning to make the score 2-1.
The 'Jacks added onto their lead in the sixth, as a bases loaded single by Arriaga drove in pinch runner Simone Medeiros. Pinch hitter Alex Dubose then smacked a ball over the left field fence to score herself, Arriaga and Lexi Benson for a 6-1 lead.
In the circle, Wilbur was strong once again in pitching the second game of the doubleheader, as she went six strong innings of five-hit ball and struck out six batters to earn her 19th win of the season. Reagan Chism pitched one inning of relief, needing just eight pitches to record the final three outs of the contest.
GAME THREE - 7-2
Entering Saturday's game with the series win secured, the Ladyjacks got going early with a pair of long balls off the bat of Camryn Middlebrook and Shaylon Govan to take a 2-0 lead. After Gaby Garcia followed with a double, the 'Jacks got runners on the corners thanks to a single from Alex Hedspeth. Both runners were then driven in by a double from Mackenzie Bennett. giving SFA a 4-0 lead in the first inning.
In the bottom of the third inning, the Islanders scored two runs off Ladyjack starter Kassidy Wilbur (20-3), the only runs they would place on the board in the contest.
With one out in the top of the fifth, Govan hit her second home run of the game to push the lead to 5-2. A single from Garcia and a double from Mackenzie Bennett then pushed the lead to 6-2. A final insurance run was tacked on in the seventh inning, as Arriaga singled home Nguyen, who was pinch running for Garcia after the sophomore doubled.
Wilbur pitched seven innings in the contest, scattering seven hits and four walks while giving up the two runs. She struck out six batters in the contest, throwing 120 pitches to earn her third win of the series.
Bennett led the 'Jacks with three RBI and, along with Garcia, notched three hits. Govan and Garcia both score a pair of runs in the contest.
