PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas -- The SFA softball team used a flurry of home runs to cage the Panthers of Prairie View A&M by a 10-1 score on Tuesday afternoon. The Ladyjacks mashed a program record six home runs in the five-inning contest to earn the victory, their 18th of the season and fourth consecutive via the run-rule. SFA hit three balls over the fence in the very first inning of play and scored 10 runs on a total of nine hits in the contest, improving to 18-8 overall.
HOW IT HAPPENED
SFA's first six batters all reached base in the contest, as Bryana Novegil led off with a walk and advanced to second on a single by Camryn Middlebrook. Shaylon Govan then launched her eighth home run of the season to make it a 3-0 game. Gaby Garcia then followed Govan with a solo shot of her own, and the 'Jscks took a 4-0 lead. After Alex Hedspeth was hit by a pitch and got aboard, Mackenzie Bennett clobbered a ball over the fence as well to make it a 6-0 Ladyjack lead.
With the top fo the order back up to bat in the second, the Ladyjacks got solo home runs by Middlebrook and Govan back-to-back to make it 8-0, and Gaby Garcia would come around to score on a throwing error by the Panthers to make it a 9-0 margin.
In the top of the fifth inning, pinch hitter Lexi Benson hit a big fly of her own over the outfield wall to get the lead to 10-0, and despite a Panther run via an RBI groundout in the bottom of the frame, SFA was able to close out the game without trouble.
Kassidy Wilbur was sharp in the circle on the way to earning her 14th win of the season, allowing just one hit and two walks while striking out five batters. Raigan Mock pitched an inning of relief for Wilbur in the fifth. Givan, Middlebrook and Garcia led the 'Jacks with two hits and two runs scored apiece, with Govan tallying a team-high four RBI as well.
