SAN ANTONIO, Texas -- The SFA softball team extended its win streak to eight straight games and opened league play with a pair of victories over UIW on Friday in San Antonio. The Ladyjacks surged to an 11-1 victory in the opening game of the day and shut out UIW 8-0 in the nightcap to improve to 9-7 on the season and 2-0 in SLC play. The Ladyjacks close out the series with a rubber match against the Cardinals on Saturday.
GAME 1 | 11-1
In the first game, the Ladyjacks would get on the board in the first inning off the bat of Shaylon Govan, who drove in Camryn Middlebrooks with an RBI double. Govan then scored on a single by Alex Hedspeth to open up an early 2-0 lead. The Ladyjacks opened the game up in the third inning, beginning with a Bryana Novegil home run. Govan then homered one batter later to drive in herself and Middlebrook. Kayla Wallace earned an RBI with a bases loaded walk, as Gaby Garcia came around to score and make the lead 6-0. Hedspeth came in to score on a fielder's choice by Amanda Carden, and another RBI walk, this time by Novegil, closed out the six-run inning for the 'Jacks.
A throwing error in the fifth inning by UIW allowed Lexi Benson to come home, and Novegil drove in two runs with an RBI single one batter later to push the lead to 11-0. UIW would tack on a run in the bottom of the fifth inning but was unable to stave off a run-ruling, which ended the game after five innings.
Govan and Novegil tied for the team lead with three RBI's apiece, and were joined by Middlebrook in notching two hits apiece. Kassidy Wilbur earned the win in the circle, hurling four innings of shutout ball and scattering two hits and a walk across four frames. She struck out six batters from UIW, and was relieved by Raigan Mock in the fifth.
GAME 2 | 8-0
The Ladyjacks opened up the scoring in the second game with the long ball, as Middlebrook put one out over the fence in the third inning and was followed by a three-run shot by Hedspeth to open up a 4-0 lead. In the fourth inning, Novegil walked and Middlebrook was hit by a pitch to set up Govan, whose base knock into center field plated Noevgil. As Govan stretched to second on the throw to home plate, the Cardinals then tried to throw out Govan at second, allowing Middlebrook to come home on the play. Finally, a groundout by Hedspeth plated Govan for a 7-0 lead.
An Amanda Carden RBI single in the seventh plated SFA's final run of the contest. Wilbur was sharp in her second start of the day, hurling seven shutout innings while giving up two hits and walking five. Wilbur also fanned 10 batters in the contest while improving to 9-3 on the season. Govan led the 'Jacks with three hits in the contest, while Hedspeth tallied four RBI's in the contest to lead her team.
