
Ladyjacks Battle #22 Mississippi State in Opener at The Snowman Tournament

STARKSVILLE, MS. -- The Ladyjack softball team opened up play at The Snowman tournament on Sunday, dropping the opener against Missouri State by a 7-0 score but rebounding to hang tough with #22 Mississippi State in the matinee game, ultimately falling by a 4-2 score. SFA (0-2) will look to rebound in tomorrow's action with a rematch against Missouri State and 9:00 a.m as well as a single game against Southern Illinois at 11:30 a.m.
GAME 1 | vs. Missouri State
The Ladyjacks got off to a strong start against Missouri State in the opener, finding themselves trailing by just a solitary unearned run through three innings. The Bears then opened up the lead in the later innings, adding solo runs in the fourth and fifth innings and a pair of runs in the sixth. A final run was pushed across the plate in the seventh frame to bring about the final margin.
Alex Hedspeth went 2-4 at the plate on the day, while Shaylon Govan notched a total of three walks on the day, Kassidy Wilbur went the distance in the circle for the 'Jacks, racking up eight strikeouts across seven innings.
GAME 2 | vs. #22 Mississippi State
In the afternoon matinee, the Ladyjacks ceded a second-inning run to the Bulldogs before pushing a run across in the fourth inning to tie up the contest. Mississippi State would find three more runs in the sixth inning off Shaylon Govan, making her first career start in the circle, to take a 4-1 lead. Bryana Novegil's RBI groundout in the seventh trimmed the lead to two runs, but the 'Jacks rally came up short after that.
Marisa Arriaga notched a pair of hits for SFA, while Gaby Garcia had SFA's other hit in the contest. Govan pitched five innings and recorded four strikeouts in the contest, while Kassidy Wilbur pitched an inning of relief and notched one punchout.
