
SFA Track and Field Competes at FasTrak Collegiate Opener in Houston

Stephen F. Austin kicked off the 2021-2022 indoor track season in Houston on Saturday in the FasTrak Collegiate Opener. Both the men and women made strong first impressions with multiple top-three finishes in many different events.
Men's results
Junior Mike Bayley finished in 1st place in the men's 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.55, beating out WAC-rival Zakell Johnson from Lamar by a tenth of a second. Freshman Joseph Harding finished runner-up in the men's 60-meter finals with a time of 6.84, just a hundredth of a second behind first-place, while sophomore Connor Bragg took home a 15th place finish in the men's 200-meter finals with a time of 22.94.
Freshman Gabe Gilfillan grabbed 2nd place in the pole vault finals with a mark of 5.19 meters. In the long jump, it was junior Sheldon Noble leading the way for the 'Jacks with a mark of 6.92 and a 4th place finish. Branson Ellis, competing unattached, finished first with a mark of 5.34m.
Kevin and Cam Steward finished 1st and 2nd respectively in both the shot put and the weight throw. Kevin reached a mark of 15.69m in the shot put and 17.18m. Cam finished just behind his older brother with 15.26m and 16.73m.
Women's results
Junior Cayla Burch opened up her season with a 1st place finish in the 200-meter finals with a time of 24.32. Asia Giles (25.25) finished in 5th place and Courtney Young (25.56) grabbed a 7th place finish as well.
Burch and Young weren't finished yet, as they, along with Nissi Kabongo and Christiana Mudd, took home first place in the 4x400-meter relay with a time of 3:48:23, five seconds ahead of second. Kabongo also added a first-place finish in the high jump with a mark of 1.82m. Senior Mathilde Coquillaud-Salomon finished in third place at 1.62 meters.
Erica Ellis and Riley Floerke dominated the pole vault as they grabbed 1st and 2nd respectively. Ellis with a mark of 4.41m and Floerke with a 4.12m, finished over a meter better than third-place (3.05m).
Junior Mathilde Guillaume finished the 60-meter hurdles with an impressive time of 8.74 to grab 1st place while freshman Morgan Taylor (8.86) finished just behind her for 4th.
Avery Ellis-Byerly (13.00m) edged out teammate Angel Richmore (12.99m) for first place in the shot put finals. Michelle Ogbemudia (17.22) completed the Lumberjack sweep of the throwing events with a first-place finish in the weight throw. Richmore also finished in third palace in the long jump finals with a mark of 5.68m.
Chandee Bachemeyer was the lone representative for the 'Jacks in the 400-meter finals and did the team proud with a 4th place finish with a time of 1:03:52.
Tori Hardy (7.85) and Lindsey Davis (7.88) finished in 5th and 6th respectively in the 60-meter finals while Asia Giles (7.95) finished just a few spots behind in 8th.

The Lumberjacks will have a month off for winter break but will look to build off of their impressive performance in Houston as they visit College Station on Saturday, January 15th, for the Ted Nelson invitational.
