The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks took down Liberty inside Dickies Arena in Fort Worth by a score of 63-51 to improve to 8-2 on the season. The 'Jacks have now won four straight games since dropping the title game in Cancun.
Nigel Hawkins got the 'Jacks going as he scored 7 of the teams' first 9 points to open the game including two three-pointers. David Kachelries then sparked an 8-0 run to give SFA a 23-19 lead with 8:48 remaining in the first half. The game turned into a defensive showcase as the first half came to a close. The Lumberjacks continued to force the Flames into tough shots as allowed them to take a 29-26 lead into the break.
The 'Jacks went on an 8-0 run early in the second half to build a 40-31 lead. The tough Lumberjack defense continued to work and prevent the Flames from getting back into the game. They began to pour it on late in the second half to pull away and glide to a comfortable but hard-fought victory.
Keller's squad held a typically-good shooting team to 19-59 (32%) from the floor and 8-36 (22%) from beyond the arc. The team only allowed three made two-point shots in the first half.
Kachelries led the way with a tied-for team-high 14 points on 5-11 shooting (3-4 from three) while adding 5 rebounds and 6 assists. Hawkins continued to look good in his first start of the season after making his first appearance of the season in the previous game. He finished with 10 points and a couple of steals. Gavin Kensmil picked up 14 points and 9 rebounds while protecting the paint all night.
The 'Jacks will return home on Tuesday, December 14th as they host Louisiana Monroe at 6:30 p.m. before hitting the road again to take on the Kansas Jayhawks at Allen Fieldhouse on Saturday, December 18th.
