NACOGDOCHES, Texas --
The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack volleyball team took on the Sam Houston Bearkats Saturday afternoon for a chance to share the Western Athletic Conference Southwest Division Regular Season Title, but fell short in today's competitive four-set match (21-25, 20-25, 25-13, 17-25). The 'Jacks wrap up the regular season with a record of 17-8, 9-4 WAC heading into the conference tournament next week.
Valeria Rosado led the way offensively with 13 kills with nine digs and three blocks, in addition to Leah Powell's 12 kills and three digs.
The Bearkats were the first team to 20 in three of the four sets, but the 'Jacks were able to consistently stay within striking distance during the midst of the contest. The Ladyjacks forced an early timeout in Set 1 as Payton Cerny cut the lead to two early on (11-9) followed by a kill from Taya Mitchell (18-15) with the 'Jacks playing from behind, but the 'Kats were able to close out the first set, 25-21.
SFA took an early 4-2 lead to kick things off in the second stanza, only for the Bearkats to rattle off four straight points to take their first lead, 7-6. Later in the set, a series of three straight kills from Valeria Rosado, Kelsey Harrington and Ielan Bradley tightened the Bearkat lead to just three (23-20), but the 'Kats closed out the set to take a 2-0 lead at the intermission.
The Ladyjacks came alive in Set 3, jumping out to a 6-2 advantage as Cerny contributed three statement kills to extend the Ladyjack lead to 11-5 mid-set. The run forced a Sam Houston timeout, where they were able to capitalize on two straight points out of the break. However, the 'Jacks were the first team to 20 this time around to take the set, 25-20 hitting .390 as a team. Following the Set 3 momentum, the 'Jacks came into Set 4 with division implications on the line able to cut the fourth set within three, but weren't able to get over the curve.
