NACOGDOCHES, Texas -- The Stephen F. Austin State Athletics Department announced on Tuesday that it will petition the NCAA to move its APR post-season access penalty from 2021-22 to the current 2020-21 season. After successfully petitioning for a delay in the penalty prior to the season's inception, new factors and variables from the current season have required the institution to ask for another route.
"Due to the ongoing uncertainty of the current COVID environment, the amount of games that have been lost due to COVID cancellations, the reduction of the NCAA tournament to one site, and the additional season of competition legislation provided by the NCAA, we felt that this was the appropriate course of action," stated Ryan Ivey, SFA's Director of Athletics. "While this is not an ideal situation for our student-athletes, we feel it is the best interest of our University, athletic department and basketball program to move forward at this time," Ivey continued.
"After pausing basketball activities for the third time due to COVID-19 this season I fully support the decision to petition to take our postseason ban for the 2020-21 basketball season", said SFA head coach Kyle Keller. "I do believe it is the best decision for our institution and our student-athletes moving forward in these unprecedented times."
In May, the University announced it had reached a negotiated resolution agreement with the NCAA. As such, the institution was required to make adjustments to its Academic Progress Rate (APR) scores for the affected years. After making the adjustments, three sports (football, men's basketball and baseball) had their respective multi-year APR scores fall below the required .930 benchmark, and therefore incurred Level 1 penalties, which includes a postseason ban.
