
Lumberjacks Cage Cardinals at Home, 102-72

NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The SFA men's basketball team scored on its opening possession and led wire-to-wire in a 102-72 defeat of Lamar on Saturday inside William R. Johnson Coliseum. SFA's balanced offense saw six players finish in double figures in the contest, which pushed SFA's record to 9-2 on the season and 5-0 in league play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The 'Jacks opened the scoring with a Gavin Kensmil layup and controlled the early going, opening up a quick 11-4 lead before giving way to the Cardinals. Lamar chipped the lead down to 13-10 at the first media timeout of the first half, but strong play by the 'Jacks, especially David Kachelries, helped extend the lead up to 29-17 with eight minutes to go in the opening half. That lead would carry into the halftime intermission as Cameron Johnson's layup with four seconds left sent SFA into the break with a 49-37 lead.
SFA came out the gates firing in the second half, converting on nine of its first 12 attempts from the field to extend the lead out to 68-47 with 13 minutes left to play. The Lumberjacks held the Cardinals at length the rest of the way, actually growing the lead in the waning minutes of gameplay out to as many as 32 points.
LEADERS
Cameron Johnson led all scorers with 21 points, converting on 8-12 attempts from the field and 3-5 tries from beyond the arc. Roti Ware and Gavin Kensmil posted 17 points apiece, while Calvin Solomon, David Kachelries and Nigel Hawkins each tallied double-digit points.
Ware and Kachelries each dished out five assists, while Nana Antwi-Boasiako and Calvin Solomon each blocked two shots.
KEY NUMBERS
Entering the matchup ranked second nationally in field-goal percentage, the Lumberjacks lived up to that category once again, finishing the game 37-62 (59 percent) from the field. The 'Jacks punished Lamar with 50 points down low.
