NACOGDOCHES, Texas -- SFA Volleyball head coach Debbie Humphreys has announced the hiring of Evan Amstutz to her staff to round out the staff for the upcoming season. Amstutz, a native of Toledo, Ohio, comes to SFA after serving at Angelo State for the past two seasons. As an assistant coach for the Rams, Amstutz helped guide the squad to a 51-13 record and a 2019 Lone Star Conference Tournament Championship. He also helped mentor four All-Americans and twelve All-Conference student-athletes at ASU.
"We are excited to have Evan join our staff", said SFA head coach Debbie Humphreys. "He bring lots of experience training volleyball players and in the area of recruiting. We feel like he will allow us to continue moving our program forward as we strive to be one of the top mid-majors in the country."
Prior to his time at Angelo State, Amstutz was an assistant coach at Division-II Urbana University in Ohio in 2017, where the Blue Knights finished in third place in the Mountain East Conference and advanced to the MEC tournament semifinals before falling to eventual champion Wheeling Jesuit in five sets. In 2016, Amstutz was named to the American Volleyball Coaches Association "Thirty Under 30" list, which honors up-and-coming coaching talent at all levels of volleyball.
In addition to his collegiate coaching, Amstutz had the opportunity to serve as the head coach for the Lone Star High Performance team that competed in the High Performance Championships in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida during the summer of 2019. His team earned a spot on the podium with a silver medal.
A graduate of Wittenberg University, Amstutz served on staff there with a team that won the 2011 Division III National Championship and three straight conference championships. From there he went to Miami (Ohio) to earn his Masters of Kinesiology and Health while serving as a volunteer assistant for a team that jumped from 11th place to a second-place finish in the Mid-American Conference tournament.
Amstutz then returned to his alma mater, Wittenberg, to launch the school's Division III men's volleyball program and serve as its head coach for two years before leaving to work as the assistant at Urbana.
He currently resides in Nacogdoches with his wife, Molly, and his daughter, Charlotte.
