My Lumberjack Life: Skylar Black

SFA Athletics is continuing a new series called My Lumberjack Life. With the 2019-20 season of competition cut short, this series is an opportunity for our athletes to share how they've been dealing with the recent global events, and how they are spending their time away from campus and the sport they play.
Saturday, March 14, 2020 is a day I will never forget. Coach Cardenas called the team to the field for a meeting. He then informed us that the NCAA was suspending play for the remainder of our baseball season due to COVID-19. My heart sank...not just for me, but for every other senior sitting in that locker room. The whole team had worked their tails off this year and we were having a heck of a season. Many of us had sacrificed so much and put in the extra time and work to get a position on the field.
I remember feeling sad because the team this year had an extremely special bond. We had decided at the beginning of the year to treat one another like brothers and we had become one big family. I have been at SFA for four and a half years and this group of guys are some of my closest friends and the best group to be around. It's like having 33 close friends that you do everything with on and off the field.
This season was extremely special to me for several reasons. I have spent my whole collegiate career working to be in the position that I was in when our season ended. As a team we had started off somewhat slow, but we were getting hot at the right time. In fact, we were the only team to sweep the first conference series.
Since social distancing has been put into play my days consist of doing homework, playing video games, getting in some workouts and binge watching anything I can on Hulu and Netflix.
The next step in my journey is to return to SFA in the fall and finish out my collegiate career the right way.
To all the guys returning, and all the new guys coming in...let's make 2021 the year to remember for Lumberjack Baseball! Axe 'em Jacks!
