
Warhawks Pull Away from Lumberjacks Late in Monroe, 66-55

MONROE, La. -- The SFA men's basketball team battled back to briefly take a fourth-quarter lead over Louisiana-Monroe on Saturday evening in a tight contest, but was undone by a 16-2 run by the hosts in the final minutes of the game to drop a 66-55 decision. SFA moves to 3-2 on the season with the result.
David Kachelries led the 'Jacks with 14 points on a 4-6 effort from beyond the arc, while Roti Ware chipped in 12 points and Cameron Johnson had 11.
The game started off strong for the Lumberjacks, as a Calvin Solomon three-pointer gave SFA an early 5-3 lead, the third of eight lead changes in the opening half of the contest. Back and forth play continued throughout the first half, with neither team carving out a lead bigger than three points. A put-back dunk by Solomon with just under seven minutes to go in the half tied the game at 20-20, but the Warhawks would outscore the 'Jacks 9-6 in the final minutes of the half to take a 29-26 score at the halftime intermission.
Beginning the second half, the hosts opened up a seven-point lead (34-27) with 17:47 left to go in the half with the first of six second-half treys by the Warhawks. In response, the Lumberjacks strung together a 7-0 run to pull ahead slightly, 42-41, with nine minutes left to go. Later, after Roti Ware's jumper gave SFA a 49-47 lead, ULM responded with a 15-1 run over the next three minutes of game time to open up a 62-50 lead and take command of the game for good.
The Lumberjacks converted on 40.9 percent (18-44) of their attempts from the field in the game, while their counterparts shot 52.9 percent from the floor in the contest and 55 percent (11-20) from beyond the arc in the game.
SFA will be back in action on Wednesday inside William R. Johnson Coliseum, as they are set to face Arkansas State in a 6:30 p.m. contest.
