RICHMOND, KY – The Lumberjack football team kept right on rolling on Saturday, knocking off the Colonels of Eastern Kentucky University inside Roy Kidd Stadium, 24-6. SFA jumped out to a 14-3 halftime lead and tacked on 10 more points in the second half to improve to 5-3 on the season. The victory was SFA's fifth in a row and second over an FCS foe this season, marking the program's first five-game winning streak since the 2011 season.
Jaquarion Turner gashed the Colonels for 207 yards on the ground on 20 carries (10.4 ypc), helping the Lumberjacks post 238 yards on the ground on the day. Trae Self threw for 124 yards and a touchdown, while also rushing for a score on the ground while gaining 40 yards on 11 carries.
The star of the game for the 'Jacks was the defense, however, as they held the Colonels offense to just 214 yards in the game, forced seven punts and tallied six sacks on the day. SFA also picked off two EKU passes and held EKU to just six points on the day.
After a punt by both teams on their opening drive of the contest, SFA relied on the playmaking skills of Xavier Gipson and Trae Self to find the end zone, as Gipson tallied a rush and a reception each of 16 yards to get the 'Jacks into scoring position, where Self capped off the drive with a seven-yard touchdown run, his third rushing score of the season. The drive consisted of six plays for 53 yards and pushed the Lumberjacks ahead 7-0 after a PAT by Chris Campos.
Capitalizing off of an interception by Myles Heard, the 'Jacks then marched down the field in quick succession thanks to two strong runs by Jaquarion Turner, and capped off the four-play drive with a 30-yard touchdown catch by Xavier Gipson from Self, his seventh of the year, to extend the 'Jacks lead to 14-0 at the end of the first quarter.
After EKU responded with a 12-play, 80-yard drive to get into scoring position, the Lumberjack defense held firm and held the hosts to a field goal to maintain a 14-3 lead with five minutes before the halftime break. The SFA defense came up big once again before halftime, as the Colonels began a drive with good field position just before half after an SFA fumble, but were forced to punt by a resilient 'Jacks defense.
In the third quarter, the Colonels marched down the field and got into scoring position, only to be held to another field goal by the Lumberjack defense, trimming the lead to 14-6. Later in the quarter with the Colonels backed up and punting from their own end zone, a partially blocked punt was received and returned by Zach Nwachukwu for a 22-yard touchdown to increase the lead to 21-6.
On SFA's ensuing drive, Turner's 39-yard scamper down to the EKU five-yard line set up a 23-yard field goal by Camps to push the lead to 24-6 with 12 minutes left to play in the contest. From there, the 'Jacks held the Colonels scoreless as a missed field goal and SFA's second pick of the day kept the hosts at bay.
SFA returns to action at home next weekend against Pittsburg State in the final home contest of the fall 2020 season.
