Complete Southland Conference Release
FRISCO, Texas - A sterling defensive effort helped the SFA football team claim its first victory of the 2019 season Saturday night, and Monday morning one of the key cogs of that defensive unit received an additional accolade because of his efforts.
In a release issued by the league office, redshirt freshman defensive end Amad Murray was named the Southland Conference Defensive Player of the Week for the first time in his career.
Hailing from Huntsville, Texas, Murray becomes the second Lumberjack this season to earn a Southland Conference Player of the Week honor and the first to be named the Southland Conference Defensive Player of the Week since Alize Ward took home the title on Sept. 18, 2017.
Thanks in large part to Murray's efforts, the 'Jacks stopped their seven-game losing skid that dated back to the 2018 season while spoiling —/rv Lamar's homecoming festivities Saturday night in Beaumont, Texas. Murray racked up a total of six tackles while also notching two of the 'Jacks' four sacks on the night.
Murray got to Cardinals' quarterback Jordan Hoy twice on third down to snuff out a pair of drives by Lamar. With Murray on its side, SFA held Lamar to its lowest point total at home since 2017 and ended its five-game winning streak at Provost Umphrey Stadium.
Murray and the rest of the 'Jacks have their sights set on NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas, where they will tangle with age-old Piney Woods rival rv/rv Sam Houston State Saturday afternoon at 3:00 p.m. in the 94th annual Battle of the Piney Woods presented by HEB. ESPN+ and the ESPN app will carry the clash between the two rivals.
