Complete Southland Conference Release
FRISCO, Texas - For the first time in her collegiate career, SFA volleyball junior libero Madelynn Miller has been named the Southland Conference Defensive Player of the Week. The news was made official by the league office in a press release issued Monday afternoon.
Thanks to the defensive play of the Lorena, Texas, product, the Ladyjacks locked down their biggest victory of 2019 thus far in the final match of the Arkansas State Invitational. SFA won two of its three matches in Jonesboro, but without question the biggest victory came Saturday when SFA took down previously unbeaten and in-state rival rv Rice.
In that match, Miller led a gritty all-around floor defense effort by the Ladyjacks by scooping up a season-high 29 digs in SFA's five-set triumph over the Owls. Thanks to those 29 digs, she eclipsed the 1,000-dig mark for her collegiate career as well. Through SFA's three matches last week, Miller racked up 62 digs - good for an average of 5.62 per set - and helped SFA limit its foes to a collective attack percentage of .185.
Thanks to her 29-dig performance, Miller upped her career dig total to 1,005. So far this year, no libero in the Southland Conference - and few in the nation - have exceeded the numbers Miller has put up. The transfer from Incarnate Word is averaging a Southland-best 5.48 digs per set which ranks 13th among all NCAA Division I volleyball players.
Miller and the rest of the Ladyjacks are set to wrap up their 13-match run away from Nacogdoches this weekend by taking part in the UT-Arlington Maverick Invitational. SFA joins Prairie View A&M, Chicago State and UT-Arlington as the four teams in the invite and the Ladyjacks' three-match run starts Friday at 4:00 p.m. when they take on Prairie View A&M.
