Batista Finishes as SFA's Top Performer at Golfweek Program Championship

PAWLEY'S ISLAND, S.C. - Senior Alexandra Batista penciled in her second-lowest round of the Golfweek Program Challenge Tuesday and finished in a tie for 27th place to lead the SFA women's golf team as it concluded its first tournament of the 2019-20 year.
Batista finished the third round with a 3-over 75 which made her final score an 8-over 224.
As a team, the Ladyjacks finished 12th out of 15 teams. Over the 54-hole tournament SFA carded a 56-over 920 and finished ahead of Illinois-Chicago, Gardner-Webb and Presbyterian.
Freshman Karina Benavides was SFA's second-place finisher, recording a 13-over 229 to finish in 47th place overall. Taking the biggest jump up the leaderboard through the final 18 holes was Kelly Yang who rose 12 spots by 3-over 75 which featured four birdies and an eagle.
Also moving up the leaderboard through the last round was Zayda Cedillo who improved by five spots through her last 18 holes. Cedillo recorded one birdie and one eagle to finish with a 5-over 77 during round three. At the end of the three-round event, she posted a 58th-place finish.
Paola Cortes rounded out the contingent of Ladyjack golfers at the season-opening event by carding a 24-over 240 to finish in 66th place.
High Point shot an 8-over 872 through the 54-hole tournament to claim the team title. In order to do so, however, it was forced to hold off a hard-charging Marshall squad who rose four spots over the last 18 holes to finish with a 12-over 876 to score a runner-up finish. Delaware (13-over 877), USC Upstate (14-over 878) and Stetson (15-over 879) rounded out the top five teams.
The tournament's top finisher was UNC Wilmington's Phu Khine who shot a sterling 5-under 211 through the 54-hole tournament. With that score, she finished two strokes ahead of Marshall's Shelby Brauckmuller (3-under 213) and three strokes up on the trio of Kerri Parks from Marshall, Sarah May from Stetson and Pan Paksanont from USC Upstate, all of whom shot a 2-under 214.
SFA will be back in action next on September 30 when the Ladyjacks travel to Magnolia,Texas, to take part in the Sam Houston State Bearkat Invitational at the High Meadow Ranch Golf Club.
