PAWLEY'S ISLAND, S.C. - Concluding a strong performance in his opening tournament of the year, SFA men's golf junior Steven Fabik penciled in a 2-over 72 over the final round to finish in a tie for sixth place at the Golfweek Program Championship.
The third-year man was SFA's lone top-ten finisher at the event after sophomore Johannes Gudmundsson 1-over 71 through the last 18 holes. Gudmundsson's final scorecard read a 1-under 209 through 54 holes to finish in a tie for 13th place.
Thanks to Fabik's strong two-day stretch, SFA finished in a tie for eighth place in the field of 15 teams. As a team, the 'Jacks carded a collective 8-over 855 through the three-round tournament to sit in a tie with George Mason.
The strongest showing by an SFA individual through the third and final round came courtesy of Maxime Leclerc who rocketed 10 spots up the leaderboard by shooting a 2-over 72 through the last 18 holes. Leclerc's fine final round allowed him to finish in a tie for 62nd place.
Alec Brown birdied his last hole of the tournament but had to settle for a 7-over 77 during the last round of play. That dropped him down to a tie for 54th place as he finished with a 10-over 220 during the three-round tournament.
Justin Benson also moved up one spot on the leaderboard through the last round by producing a 6-over 76. For the tournament Benson finished in a tie for 79th place.
Jacksonville came on strong in the final round and leapfrogged both Jacksonville State and Old Dominion to claim the team title. The Dolphins shot a 12-under 828 as a team to beat out Jacksonville State by three strokes. Jacksonville was also forced to hold off a hard-charging Florida Atlantic Squad who moved up from sixth to third over the final 18 holes and finished the tournament with a 7-under 833.
The tournament's top finisher was UNC Wilmington's Segundo Oliva Pinto who shot a sterling 18-under 192 through the 54-hole tournament. With that score, he finished four strokes ahead of Jacksonville's Michael Sakane (14-under 196) and six strokes up on Jacksonville State's Quim Vidal Mora (12-under 198).
SFA will be back on the road next weekend when they head to Ruston, La., to take part in the Louisiana Tech Squire Creek Invitational. The three-day event begins Sunday at Squire Creek Country Club.
