NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The SFA men's and women's cross country teams will compete in a total of five regular season races this fall, beginning with the hosting of the SFA Lumberjack Opener to close out the month of August. The one-day collegiate meet will take place on August 30, with the annual high school Lumberjack Invite meet to follow on August 31. Head coach Cody Clark is in his ninth season at the helm of the 'Jacks, and will look to build on the Top-3 finishes by his team last season.
Following the meets to close out August, the 'Jacks will travel to Houston on September 13 for the Rice Invitational, followed by a hiatus which stretches into October. The 'Jacks will attend the OSU Jamboree in Stillwater, Oklahoma on October 5, which serves as the longest continuously running cross country meet in the nation. Next, SFA heads to College Station and the Arturo Barrios Invitational on October 19 to close out the month of October.
The 2019 Southland Conference Cross Country Championship meet will be hosted by Central Arkansas in Conway, Arkansas on November 1, followed two weeks later by the NCAA South Central Regional in Fayetteville, Arkansas on November 15. Should SFA qualify any runners, the NCAA National Championships will be run on November 23 in Terra Haute, Indiana.
"I think we've got a good mix of meets this fall, beginning with the Lumberjack Invite here at home, which will be the first home meet for us in a few seasons", said SFA cross country head coach Cody Clark. "Following that, the meets at Rice, Oklahoma State and Texas A&M will give us a good look at regional and nationally ranked programs, so that we can see where we rank among them and help to prepare us for the Southland Conference Championship. I think our teams return some really good runners from last season, and we have a lot of new faces that will look to get in the mix and help us compete for a championship."
Heading into the upcoming season, the Ladyjacks rank 12thin the South Central Region, while the men rank 13thin the regional rankings.
"On the women's side, we'll have two All-Conference returners in Taryn Surratt and Claire Crone, while Kelsey Ramirez is also back after just missing out on All-Conference last fall, so we've got a good core to build on", said Clark. "After that top three, we have a lot of newcomers that will be vying for those final two spots. On the men's side, Titus comes back to build on his Freshman of the Year and All-Conference campaign last year. Pedro Flores is a good leader as an upperclassman, and will help us build up some of the new guys for this season. Yoel Yoel is a transfer from Allen Community College, who ran well at the Chili Pepper Festival last year alongside our guys and who will be able to come in and help us immediately."
