Preseason All-Conference duo lead the way in shutout effort
NACOGODOCHES, Texas – A first-half goal from Katelyn Termini was the deciding score in the 2019 Purple and White game on Saturday night, leading the Purple squad to a 2-0 victory at SFA Soccer Field. Sophia Fondren added an insurance goal in the second period of the spirited match, which saw both teams create dangerous goal scoring opportunities.
" Good energy and identity as a team tonight", said SFA head soccer coach Wally Crittenden. "There were a couple core concepts that we spent the majority of our time in camp thus far focusing on thus far, and wanted to prepare to play a certain style. From a unit breakdown I think our forward unit will be a strength of ours and we proved that today, there were some great scoring chances that were kept off the scoreboard by some tremendous goalkeeping. Getting out here and committing to an activity like this is big, and I'm very proud of our kids and the intensity and energy that they brought to display to a great crowd tonight."
Termini's Purple squad created the first half's most dangerous goal scoring opportunities, several of which were turned aside by redshirt sophomore Madeline Talbot between the sticks for the White Team. Talbot's efforts kept the Purple Team off the board until the 18thminute, when Termini created a turnover in the final third and fired a low shot past a diving Talbot for the game's first score.
After a halftime break, the Purple Team would add a second goal off the foot of Sophia Fondren, an insurance score that would bring the final tally to 2-0.
SFA will return to action with an exhibition contest on Friday, August 16 against the University of Louisiana-Monroe in Monroe. Following that, the Ladyjacks will kick off their regular season with a road trip to College of Charleston and a neutral site contest against UNC-Wilmington on August 23 and 25.
