NACOGDOCHES – The SFA football team's 2019 campaign officially gets underway in just 46 days but prior to the season, head coach Colby Carthel and a pair of senior Lumberjacks will meet and interview with media personnel from around the state and region at the 2019 Southland Conference Media Day proceedings. Hosted this Thursday, July 18 at the Hilton Houston Post Oak by the Galleria in Houston, the one-day event will feature press conferences and student-athlete interviews on ESPN3.
Joining coach Carthel in Houston will be senior quarterback Jake Blumrick and senior safety Alize Ward.
Live interviews for all 11 of the league's football programs will be available everywhere via WatchESPN.com and the ESPN app beginning at 9 a.m. CST. Houston's KPRC-TV (NBC) sports director Randy McIlvoy, alongside ESPN and Cox Sports sideline reporter Carley McCord, will host the interviews with each Southland football team's head coach and an offensive and defensive player. The morning's interviews will wrap up at 11:55 a.m. with an afternoon interview session running from 1:15-4:40 p.m.
Carthel, who began his tenure in Nacogdoches back in December and is entering his first season at the helm of the SFA program, will be making his first appearance at the conference's annual media event. Blumrick has served as the Lumberjacks' starting signal caller behind center in 13 of SFA's 21 games over the past two seasons, while Ward was tabbed a preseason All-Southland Second Team defense pick last week after garnering All-Southland Second Team honors in 2018.
The trio will step onto the ESPN3 main stage at 1:45 p.m. for the live broadcast as Carthel will take to the main podium to be interviewed by McIlvoy and field questions from various Southland media members. Both Blumrick and Ward will participate in an interview with McCord on the ESPN3 set, before all three head to the conference's social media suite and local TV interviews at 2:15 p.m. While in the social media suite, Carthel, Blumrick and Ward will take part in social media segments that can be viewed on the Southland's Facebook, Twitter and Instagram accounts. During and following their time in the social media suite, the three will be available for individual interviews with the media until 2:40 p.m.
Southland Conference commissioner Tom Burnett will provide opening remarks from the podium at 9 a.m. to kick off media day as the league unveils its 2019 preseason poll.
Archived video of each team's press conference and select quotes from each attendee will be made available after the conclusion of Southland Media Day.
The 'Jacks will begin their season Saturday, Aug. 31 in Waco, Texas, with an FBS matchup against the Big 12 Conference's Bears of Baylor. Kickoff is slated for 6 p.m. with the game broadcast on ESPN+.
