Men’s Golf Takes on Second-Straight Tournament, in Arizona for Wyoming Cowboy Classic

‘Jacks to compete in state of Arizona for first time in program history, among highly-competitive 20-team tournament field
NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The SFA men's golf team will have one final tune-up prior to the 2019 Southland Conference Championship, competing this Monday and Tuesday, April 8-9 at the 17th annual Wyoming Cowboy Classic. For the first time in program history, the Lumberjacks will be playing in the state of Arizona at the Whirlwind Golf Club at Wild Horse Pass in Chandler, Arizona, located just southeast of Phoenix.
The Format
The two-day, 54-hole tournament will feature the first two rounds of golf played Monday, April 8, followed by the third and final 18-hole round taking place the morning of Tuesday, April 9. Each of day of play will get underway at 9:30 a.m. CST with a shotgun start.
The Course
The 2019 Wyoming Cowboy Classic will be played on the Cattail Course at the Whirlwind Golf Club at Wild Horse Pass, which is a par-72, 7,218-yard championship course. Built into the ancient, native landscape, the course was designed by renowned architect Gary Panks and features a true desert feel. One of the premier golf facilities in the Southwest, the Whirlwind Golf Club at Wild Horse Pass is quiet, peaceful and serves as a destination golf club located just 11 miles from the Phoenix airport.
The Tournament Field
In its 17th year of existence, the Wyoming Cowboy Classic will have a total of 20 teams competing for a title in Arizona with another three sending individual competitors to join the playing field. Four competing teams are ranked among the nation's top 80 according to the most recent Golfstat rankings, including 39th-ranked UCLA, No. 63 Boise State, 77th-ranked Cal State Fullerton and No. 78 Santa Clara. SFA will join Cal State Northridge, Gonzaga, Grand Canyon, Northern Colorado, Old Dominion, Southern Utah, UC Davis, UC Santa Barbara, UT Arlington, UT Rio Grande Valley, Utah State, Utah Valley, Weber State, Wichita State and Wyoming. The tournament's field will also have individual golfers competing from Arizona State, Colorado and Denver.
The Lineup
The Lumberjacks' lineup will have some slight adjustments from last week but the top of the order remains much unchanged. Seniors Angelo Leyvani and Jake Hendrix will look to lead SFA once again, while sophomore Steven Fabik and freshmen Alec Brown and Johannes Gudmundsson will also be taking to the links in Arizona Monday and Tuesday. Sophomore Midland College transfer Justin Benson will be competing as an individual for the 'Jacks.
Last Time on the Links
Last week, SFA placed sixth among a 15-team field at Sam Houston State's Huntsville Toyota Bearkat Invitational in Montgomery, Texas. The 'Jacks turned in the second-lowest score in the opening round at the Walden on Lake Conroe Golf Club, shooting a 3-under 285 on the opening 18 holes of play as Leyvani captured his first career first-place finish. Finishing the tournament with its third-lowest three-round total of 2018-19 at 15-over 879, SFA saw Leyvani card his second-lowest 54-hole score of his career with a 7-under 209. Shooting his second-lowest single round score of the season on the final 18 holes of play (4-under 68), Leyvani tied for first with UTEP's Oskar Ambrosius before the two played a one-hole playoff for the individual crown. Hendrix also placed within the top 10, tying for eighth with an even-par 216 for his second-straight top-25 finish.
First Time for Everything
The 'Jacks will be making their first appearance at the Wyoming Cowboy Classic after playing the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate in Palm Desert, California, the previous two years.
