Ladyjacks defeat Prairie View A&M in convincing fashion in Houston to reach eight-team NCAA Bowling Championship final site
HOUSTON, Texas – The SFA bowling team's bid for a second NCAA national title and quest for the school's second Division I team national championship got off to a great start Friday afternoon inside Emerald Bowl in Houston, where the Ladyjacks defeated Prairie View A&M in the 2019 NCAA Women's Bowling Championship opening round. With its victory over the host Lady Panthers in Houston, SFA advances to the NCAA Women's Bowling Championship final site where the Ladyjacks will bowl in the eight-team championship bracket at RollHouse Wickliffe in Wickliffe, Ohio, next week.
The Ladyjacks needed just the traditional team match and the Baker total pinfall match to take down Prairie View in the NCAA Bowling Championship's opening round mega match, 2-0. Ranked No. 6 nationally in both the NCAA's RPI and the latest National Tenpin Coaches Association (NTCA) Top 25 poll, SFA claimed a 62-pin win in the traditional team match (843-781) before clinching the mega match with an 88-pin victory in the Baker total pinfall match (921-833).
Backed by a 197 game from senior Paige Beeney, the Ladyjacks got a 178 from junior Megan Eaglehouse and a 162 from freshman Carlene Beyer to take the traditional team match in convincing fashion. SFA got off to a strong start in the Baker total pinfall match with a 206-152 opening game win, before notching a 172-155 game two triumph. In game four, the Ladyjacks pulled away from the Lady Panthers with a 211-174 victory and still managed pinfall totals of 161 and 171 in their game three and game five setbacks.
SFA will now head to the 2019 NCAA Women's Bowling Championship's eight-team championship bracket, which will be held at RollHouse Wickliffe outside of Cleveland next Thursday-Saturday, April 11-13. The Mid-American Conference and the Greater Cleveland Sports Commission are the hosts of the national championship. Tickets for the championship can be purchased on NCAA.com prior to the championship.
Southland Bowling League champion and fourth-ranked Sam Houston State awaits the Ladyjacks in the first round, which will take place Thursday, April 11 at 8 a.m. CST. Lanes are still yet to be determined for match three of the 2019 NCAA Women's Bowling Championship.
The championship bracket is double-elimination, with each round consisting of a best-of-three match that includes the use of three team game formats - Baker total pinfall, five-person traditional team and a best-of-seven Baker match. The champion will be determined using a best-of-seven Baker match. The championship final will air at 5:30 p.m. CST, Saturday, April 13 on ESPNU.
Last Wednesday afternoon, SFA gained its fourth NCAA at-large bid since 2015 and first since 2017 with its selection to the 2019 NCAA Bowling Championship as announced by the women's bowling selection committee via a live broadcast on NCAA.com.
The 2019 championship field is comprised of 12 teams with eight schools rewarded automatic qualification through conference championships. The Ladyjacks were one of four NCAA national title contenders who received an at-large selection. Ranked No. 1 in the NCAA's RPI rankings, Vanderbilt joined second-ranked McKendree, fourth-ranked Sam Houston State and third-ranked Nebraska as the four teams placed in the championship bracket in Ohio. The remaining eight teams are competing this weekend in opening round matches April 5-7. Opening round teams and matchups were determined by the NCAA women's bowling committee based on selection criteria and geography.
A total of four Southland Bowling League teams are competing for a national title at the NCAA championship with the fourth-ranked Bearkats joined by top-ranked Vanderbilt and No. 5 Arkansas State, in addition to sixth-ranked SFA.
