All-American long snapper Chris Wilkerson to become member of San Francisco 49ers as undrafted free agent
NACOGDOCHES, Texas – One of the most sought after long snappers coming out of the collegiate ranks in 2019, SFA's very own Chris Wilkerson is now a member of the NFL's San Francisco 49ers. Shortly following the completion of the 2019 NFL Draft held in America's Music City, recent Lumberjack long snapper Wilkerson received a phone call from the 49ers organization and accepted a spot on San Francisco's professional football team as an undrafted free agent.
The Waller, Texas (Waller HS), native and four-year SFA football letter winner becomes the Lumberjacks' second NFL signee in as many years, joining Los Angeles Rams' John Franklin-Meyers, who was taken 135th overall in the fourth round of the 2018 NFL Draft as the program's highest draft pick in 20 years.
An All-American First Team selection by Phil Steele FCS in 2018, Wilkerson played in the 94th East-West Shrine Game® back in January and was rated as one of the top five long snappers heading into the 2019 NFL Draft. Receiving his bachelor's degree in kinesiology last May, Wilkerson suited up in the Purple and White for the last time this past fall after being a member of the Lumberjack football program for five seasons.
Receiving just one NCAA Division I scholarship offer out of high school, Wilkerson's dream of an NFL specialist has come true after serving as SFA's starting long snapper each of the past three seasons. Wilkerson appeared in 32-straight Lumberjack football games over the last three years, providing reliable snaps on punts, field goals and extra points. Playing in a total of 42 games over four seasons, Wilkerson claimed a tackle in punt coverage during SFA's thrilling 37-31 home victory over the University of the Incarnate Word and recovered a fumble in the 34-7 road rout of Lamar during the Lumberjacks' 2017 campaign.
Last fall, Wilkerson assisted on a tackle as SFA ousted Houston Baptist 42-14 on the road. Heading into the 2018 season, he was named preseason All-America First Team by both STATS FCS and Phil Steele FCS Magazine.
