NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Hoping to secure their second-straight Southland Conference series victory, the SFA baseball team instead ran into a solid pitching performance from Northwestern State right-hander Nathan Jones who dealt the 'Jacks' a 7-0 defeat by tossing a complete game.
The 'Jacks mustered just four hits against Jones and had just one runner in scoring position throughout the game.
SCORING SUMMARY
T1 | The 'Jacks' lone error of the afternoon allowed the Demons to take the lead for good in their first set of at-bats. Sam Taylor turned his leadoff single on the game's first pitch into Northwestern State's first run of the afternoon. With one out, Taylor moved to second after Jeffrey Elkins reached on an error. From there, Tyler Smith followed with an RBI single through the right side of SFA's infield to give the Demons a 1-0 lead.
T4 | Northwestern State extended their lead to 4-0 by stringing together four hits in the top of the fourth. After SFA starting pitcher Jacob Stobart issued a leadoff walk to Tyler Smith, a groundout pushed him to second before a wild pitch moved him to third. Lenni Kunert drove an RBI single up the middle to up the Demons' lead to 2-0 before Marshall Skinner kept the line moving with a two-out single. Jakob Nunez and Sam Taylor followed with an RBI single and an RBI double respectively to put SFA at a 4-0 disadvantage.
T5 | The Demons' lead continued to grow in the fifth when Northwestern State got two more hits off of Stobart. Jeffrey Elkins started the frame with a single through the left side and he moved to second on a groundout. Following a walk Knuert delivered his second RBI hit of the day with a single through the left side of SFA's infield to make matters 5-0. Senior Manny Vasquez got the 'Jacks out of the frame by gloving a hard grounder to third and starting an inning-ending double play.
T6 | Taylor continued his strong day at the plate by blasting a one-out solo home run to left for the Demons in the sixth.
T7 | Trailing 6-0 after Northwestern State's homer in the sixth, the 'Jacks deficit grew to 7-0 after their second error of the afternoon. Vasquez misplayed a two-out grounder off the bat of Nunez which allowed Austin Stegall to come around and score.
AT THE DISH
• No Lumberjack reached base more than one time Saturday while Josh Campbell, Nick Daley, Marcus Mendez and Sean Moore each accounted for one of the hosts' four hits. SFA put only one man in scoring position during the tilt.
• Taylor led the Demons' 10-hit attack with a 3-for-5 outing at the plate. The third baseman finished with a pair of RBI and also scored two of the Demons' seven runs.
• Kunert had himself a multi-hit afternoon, too, going 2-for-5 with two RBI and a run scored.
ON THE HILL
• Suffering the loss - his first since March 22 - was Stobart (6-2) who surrendered five runs on eight hits and a pair of walks through his 4 1/3 innings of work.
• Seniors Seth Campbell and Austin Hearn threw the final three innings for the 'Jacks and did not yield an earned run. Campbell struck out a pair in the ninth while Hearn logged two frames of hitless relief.
• Jones (6-2) needed to throw just under 100 pitches in his complete-game outing. The right-hander gave up only four hits and two walks while striking out six in his second-straight complete game shutout.
ON DECK
• Sunday afternoon at 1:00 p.m., the 'Jacks will send senior right-hander Trayson Kubo to the mound as they go for their second-straight Southland Conference series victory. Northwestern State will counter with a righty of its own in Cullen McDonald as they seek series wins over SFA in back-to-back seasons.
