Senior delivers two of SFA's three hits against Bears
WACO, Texas - Senior infielder Jake Georgiades extended his hitting streak to five games with his second-straight multi-hit game, but the SFA baseball team could not push any runs across Tuesday night in a 10-0 seven-inning setback to 19th-ranked Baylor at Baylor Ballpark.
The 'Jacks mustered just three hits and five total baserunners in their sixth showdown with a ranked team this season. Baylor, meanwhile, racked up 15 hits and handed SFA its third shutout loss of 2019.
SCORING SUMMARY
B1 | After the 'Jacks were retired in order to start the game, Baylor went right to work against SFA starter Joseph Sgambelluri. Richard Cunningham and Cole Haring greeted the junior right-hander with back-to-back singles but a great throw by Brandon Uhse in right made sure Cunningham couldn't go from first to third as Vasquez applied the tag to get the lead runner and the first out. From there, Davis Wendzel drew a walk before Andy Thomas sent a high chopper over the head of a charging Carson Clowers at first for an RBI single that put the hosts up 1-0.
B2 | Two-out hitting played a key part for the Bears in a second inning that saw them double their lead. Nine-hole hitter Chase Wehsener drew a five-pitch walk before the top of Baylor's order came through again. Cunningham moved Wehsener to second with his second single of the night before Haring drove him in with an RBI single up the middle to extend the Bears' lead to 2-0.
B3 | Two more hits were posted by the Bears before Sgambelluri got himself out of the third inning. Despite a diving try at a catch by Sean Moore in left field, Andy Thomas started Baylor's third with a double before moving to third on a single by Shwa Langeliers. Right fielder Davion Downey reached on a fielder's choice and received credit for an RBI that pushed the hosts' lead to 3-0 before Sgambelluri sent Baylor back to the dugout with a strikeout and another fielder's choice ball.
B5 | Senior right-hander Austin Hearn took over for the 'Jacks on the hill in the fifth and was greeted with a leadoff double by Thomas. From there, Langliers drove an RBI single through the right side which upped the Bears' lead to 4-0.
B6 | Aided by the 'Jacks lone error of the game, Baylor was able to break things open in the home half of the sixth. Junior left-hander Jacob Stobart issued a leadoff walk that was erased with a fielder's choice ball off the bat of Haring following a flyout. After another walk loaded the bases, Thomas reached on a throwing error that allowed another run to score. Trailing 5-0 at that point, the 'Jacks' deficit grew to 8-0 after Langliers crushed a three-run home run to left field to cap the Bears' four-run inning.
B7 | Relief arm Jeremy Rodriguez retired the first two Baylor batters in the seventh with flyouts, but the third out would never come. Wehsener and Cunningham struck for consecutive singles before a seven-pitch walk to Haring loaded the bases for Wendzel. The junior drove in two runs and ended the game by lofting a ball high in the infield that dropped in for the game's final hit and put the finishing touches on the Bears' 10-0 win.
