Senior nearly captures individual crown, claims runner-up honors following one-hole playoff
MONTGOMERY, Texas – Senior Angelo Leyvani nearly captured his first career tournament title Tuesday afternoon at the Huntsville Toyota Bearkat Invitational and took home runner-up honors following a one-hole playoff. Tying his second-lowest career three-round score at 7-under 209, Leyvani shot his second-lowest single round score of the season on the final 18 holes of play (4-under 68) at the Walden on Lake Conroe Golf Club as the SFA men's golf team finished sixth among a 15-team tournament field.
Carding a 15-over 879 for the 54 holes, the Lumberjacks placed ahead of a trio of fellow Southland Conference programs, including Abilene Christian (36-over 900), New Orleans (49-over 913) and the University of the Incarnate Word (50-over 914). SFA completed the two-day event in Huntsville, Texas, just 15 strokes off champion and Bearkat Invitational host Sam Houston State, who finished at an even-par 864. The 'Jacks came just 11 strokes from runner-up UTEP (4-over 868) and nine strokes within third place finisher Lamar (6-over 870).
After both Leyvani and UTEP's Oskar Ambrosius shot a 68 in Tuesday's final round, the individual crown was determined by a one-hole playoff where Ambrosius birdied on hole 18 to win the title. Leyvani was not the only SFA golfer to finish within the top 10 as fellow senior Jake Hendrix tied for eighth among the 79-player field with a three-round tally at even-par 216. For Hendrix, it was his second top 10 finish of 2018-19 and first since the LaTour Intercollegiate (Feb. 18-19).
Freshman Alec Brown shot a 4-over 76 on the par-72, 6,756-yard course Tuesday to tie for 38th with a two-day score of 12-over 228, while sophomore Steven Fabik turned in an identical 54-hole number to tie for 38th as well. Fellow freshman Isiah Henderson (23-over 239) rounded out the Lumberjacks' lineup in Huntsville with a 69th-place finish.
Leyvani finished one stroke ahead of the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley's Pedro Lamadrid and Sam Houston State's William Holcomb, who tied for third place with scores of 6-under 210.
