Southland Conference Release
FRISCO, Texas – The SFA Track and Field team had a good day of competition at Friday's NSU Leon Johnson Invitational, and on Wednesday afternoon saw two athletes recognized for their superlative performances by the conference office. Drake Murphy and Kevin Steward were named the Southland Conference Men's Track and Field Athlete of the Week, respectively, by the league office in a Wednesday afternoon release. The award is the third of the 2018-19 season for Murphy, following his two selections during the indoor season, and first of Steward's career.
Murphy, a senior, was the highlight of the meet for SFA, as he set the school record for the men's outdoor 800m run with a time of 1:48.65 to win his race at the meet. The time was the best in the Southland Conference this season and the sixth best time in the NCAA west region. Having broken the indoor mark in the event as well, Murphy now holds both the indoor and outdoor record in the 800m run at SFA. He also ran a leg of the 4x400 relay that won the event at the NSU Invitational with a time of 3:11.62.
For Steward, a strong showing in a pair of throwing events saw him win the competition and earn his first weekly accolade. His mark of 16.63m (54-06.75) in the event was the fifth best mark in the Southland Conference this season, while his runner-up finish in the discus throw (53.72m) was a new personal best and the sixth best mark in SLC competition.
The accolades are the 11thand 12thweekly awards earned by SFA Track and Field during the 2018-19 season. Three weeks remain in the Southland Conference Athlete of the week awards.
