Ladyjacks seek first league title among eight-team field, compete for spot in NCAA Regionals at Southland Championship

MAGNOLIA, Texas – After the culmination of the SFA women's golf team's regular season two weeks ago in Beaumont, Texas, at the Lamar Cardinal Challenge, the Ladyjacks are set for Southland Conference Championship play this week in Magnolia, Texas. SFA will take on an eight-team tournament field in 54 holes of golf played across the next three days, Monday-Wednesday, April 15-17, for the 2019 Southland Women's Golf Championship held at the High Meadow Ranch Golf Club.
The Format
The three-day championship tournament will consist of three rounds of golf with 18 holes played each day. Tee times begin at 8 a.m. for each round with the last team teeing off at 10:15 a.m. and the final individual tee time listed at 10:51 a.m.
The Course
The High Meadow Ranch Golf Club features the No. 2 ranked public golf course in the greater Houston area according to both the Houston Chronicle and Houston Sports News. Unique in its kind, the par-72, 6,258-yard course is split into three six hole loops which creates one of Houston's best public courses. Designed by David Ogrin and Tim Nugent, the magnificent property was crafted into a truly beautiful golf course worthy of the neighborhood.
The Tournament Field
Every Southland program will be vying for a spot in the 2019 NCAA Regionals with two-time defending champion and No. 2 seed Houston Baptist joining top-seeded Sam Houston State, 2013-16 champion and No. 3 seed Lamar, fourth-seeded Central Arkansas, No. 5 seed Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, sixth-seeded the University of the Incarnate Word and No. 7 seed McNeese. The Ladyjacks are seeded eighth with seeds based on Golfstat's national rankings. SFA holds a national ranking of 205 according to Golfstat, while the Bearkat's are a Southland-best No. 109 in the nation.
The Lineup
The Ladyjacks will utilize the same lineup they have used for much of the spring. Led by senior Erica Lautensack and juniors Alexandra Batista and Jamee Jorgensen, SFA will rely on strong scores from junior Paola Cortes and sophomore Kelly Yang. Lautensack is ranked 18th among the conference's top 46 players, while Batista is 19th, Jorgensen 38th, Cortes 39th and Yang 44th.
Tee Times
Earning the opening tee time of the tournament's first round Monday morning, the Ladyjacks will begin at 8 a.m. and are paired with No. 7 seed McNeese. Yang will tee off first right at 8 a.m., followed by Cortes at 8:09 a.m., Jorgensen at 8:18 a.m., Batista at 8:27 a.m. and Lautensack rounding out the tee times at 8:36 a.m.

SFA closed out the 2019 regular season two weeks ago in Beaumont, Texas, at the Lamar Cardinal Challenge where the Ladyjacks placed seventh among 10 teams but got collected three top-25 individual finishes. Lautensack tied for 17th among the 59-player field as Batitsta turned in her fourth-straight top 20 and fifth consecutive top-25 finish. Cortes also placed within the top 25, tying for 23rd for her second top-25 placement in the last three outings. Throughout 2018-19, the Ladyjacks have claimed two top-five finishes as a team, placing fourth among an 11-team tournament field at the Islander Classic in Corpus Christi, Texas (Feb. 25-26). SFA's best play came a few weeks ago at Northern Arizona's Red Rocks Invitational (March 23-24) in Cornville, Arizona, where the Ladyjacks recorded their lowest three-round score since 2017 by carding a 54-over 906 for the third-lowest 54-hole total in program history.
